How many people live on the island?
No one lives on the island all year round. Kieran and Tory and up to 7 staff members live on the island during the season and a caretaker looks after the island over summer.

How big is the island?
The island is about 80 kilometres long, 15 kilometres wide at the widest point and only 3km wide at its narrowest point. It is the biggest island in Western Australia and also the most western island.

Is Dirk Hartog Island Homestead the only accommodation available of the island?
No. Camping is also available at 6 designated camping sites around the island. More information about camping and the Homestead is available in the "Accommodation" section of this website.

How long does it take to get there from Perth?
It takes about 10 hours by road, 2 hours by plane and 12 hours by bus to reach Denham, the nearest town to Dirk Hartog Island, located on the Shark Bay peninsular. From Denham the island is about 1 hour by boat or 25 minutes by plane.

Can I bring my own boat across?
Yes. We also have a new charter boat available for guests to use.

How long can I stay?
Average stay is 6 nights 7 days, however you can stay longer if you wish.

Can we hire a boat or 4WD when we are at Dirk Hartog Island?
No. But we do have 4WD Day Tours and charter boats available for Homestead Guests. Otherwise you can hire boats from Denham or organise to hire a 4WD in Perth, Gereldton or Denham.

Can we camp if we don't bring a 4WD or Boat?
For safety reasons we do not allow camping with out some form of transport.

Can I bring a 2WD vehicle across?

No. There are no paved roads on the island and the tracks are not suitable for a 2WD.


Are meals available to campers?
Meals are not available from the Homestead unless you are a Homestead Guest.

Do we need to book in advance?
Yes, as accommodation is limited.

Is it safe for children?
Yes, however adult supervision is required at all times.

Can I fillet my fish on Dirk Hartog Island?
Due to recent changes in fishing rules and regulations by the Dept. Fisheries WA we recommend you call or check out the Fisheries website before travelling to Dirk Hartog to ensure that you have the most up to date information avaiable. What do I have to bring if staying at the homestead?
Personal belongings, fishing gear, alcohol.

What do I have to bring if I am camping?

Campers must be completetly self sufficent.

Can I get fresh water or fuel from the Homestead if I am camping?

Yes. With prior notice (at least 2 weeks) we can organise to have fuel and water ready to be picked up from the Homestead upon your arrival.
